  13.      METZ Desktop Manager is a comprehensive, yet easily understood
  14. menu system and file manager for Microsoft Windows.
  15.      Desktop Manager is a Windows application program that combines
  16. several important and time-saving features into one cohesive, menu
  17. operated program.  The main function of the program provides a capable
  18. menu system for all of your Windows and non-Windows based applications.
  19. A single menu entry allows the user to simultaneously call up and execute
  20. both the application program and any data file that corresponds to that
  21. application, and move to a specified directory.
  22.      The menu system can access over 500 items per menu (2 menu lists),
  23. across floppy or hard disk drives and all directories.  You have complete
  24. freedom as to menu categories, number of menu items displayed on the screen,
  25. and can add multiple menus when required.  Additional Desktop Manager
  26. features include a fully customizable screen display blanker (screen saver),
  27. Windows arrangement functions, directory tree display, file finder,
  28. point-and-shoot file manager, automatic menu generator, and a system
  29. lock utility.
  30.      Display options include a 12 or 24 hour clock on screen, a memory
  31. display that details both DOS and Expanded EMS RAM, and current
  32. directory display.  Desktop Manager uses about 30K of memory, and comes
  33. with a clearly written users guide.
  34.  
  35.                             Using Desktop
  36.  
  37.      Desktop has an application management function (menuing),
  38. consisting of two listboxes containing descriptions of the
  39. applications and files which can be accessed.  Associated with the
  40. descriptions are the application to be run and any input files to be used.
  41. The descriptions can be a category heading (as in --Windows Utilities--),
  42. or the name or description of an executable, or a description of the file
  43. passed to an executable on startup.  This system allows you to organize
  44. your applications and files into menus according to your needs.  You can
  45. specify exactly where the application and files exist and thus avoid
  46. changing directories while accessing Windows applications and/or data.
  47.  
  48.      When you add or update a menu item, there are three fields you can fill
  49. in.  First is the description field, which can be anything you want and is
  50. displayed in the listbox on the main screen.  Next, is the application to
  51. be run.  The path is necessary if the application cannot be found in your
  52. current environment path.  The select button allows you to select an
  53. executable file to be placed in the application edit box.  Next, is the
  54. parameter list to be passed to the executable along with the path, if
  55. necessary.
  56. IMPORTANT: Running Non-Windows applications from Desktop may require an
  57. appropriate .PIF file (see the Microsoft Windows User's Guide).

  59.                        Non-registered users
  60.      Use for purposes other than evaluation requires payment of the
  61. registration fee.  Once you register and receive a license number you are
  62. automatically allowed to upgrade to future releases.  It is important
  63. that you register this application to help insure continued support and
  64. development.  Our intention is to provide useful, user-friendly
  65. applications at a low cost, and your support helps make that possible.
  66.      All available functionality is enabled in this version to provide
  67. you the ability to effectively evaluate this application.

  69. by contacting METZ Software.  All orders will receive a disk containing

  72.                           Release Notes
  73.  
  74.      Metzdll.exe is a link library for Desktop.  It must be located
  75. somewhere in your environment path.  We recommend placing it in your
  76. Windows directory.
  77.  
  78.      Desktop.dsk is the default sample menu provided with this release.
  79. Desktop.bmp and Desktop.wmf are a sample bitmap and metafile respectively,
  80. for use with the screen saver.
  81.  
  82.      A full keyboard interface is implemented, tab, arrows, paging, and
  83. enter all have functionality.
  84.  
  85.      We have tried to be as consistent with Microsoft Windows interface
  86. specifications as possible.  Please see the Microsoft Windows User's Guide
  87. for more information regarding the Windows interface.

  174.   timeouts while you are working in a DOS application under Windows.
  175.   In the past, this application would timeout even if you were actively
  176.   typing away within a DOS Window.  Now the timeout will occur
  177.   only after you are inactive in any DOS Window as well.
  178.   Please read METZKW.TXT and install the METZKW.SYS application
  179.   if you wish to prevent timeouts while you are working in a
  180.   DOS Window.
  181. * An Exit option has been added to the File menu.  This option
  182.   closes DeskTop.
  183. * A Tile option has been added to the Windows menu.
  184. * The included Clp2File.exe is an application which will save a
  185.   bitmap from the clipboard to a file, which then can be displayed

  187. * The free memory display now displays the total free memory when
  188.   running Windows 3.0.
  189. * When you Lock the system under Windows 3.0, the Cancel button
  190.   can no longer be selected while locked.
  191. * Clear Icons and Close Icons no longer closes Program Manager
  192.   when running under Windows 3.0.
  193. * The Drive pulldown menu now takes into account dynamically added
  194.   Network drives.
  195. * When copying or moving files, the disk space available calculation
  196.   was not taking into account the size of the same file on the
  197.   destination drive.  This has been fixed.
  198. * You can now double click on a file listed by the File Finder, and

  200. * The file manager has the following changes:
  201. - Performance of the copy and move process has been improved somewhat.
  202. - The File rename now accepts wildcards.
  203. - The print option will now wordwrap correctly.  Previous versions

  207. * DeskTop now supports international characters.  Should you find

  209. * A divide by zero error problem with the screen saver has been fixed.

  211.   Under Windows 3.0:
  212.     DeskTop can be used in replacement of the Microsoft Program Manager.
  213.     Change the 'shell=progman.exe' setting in the file SYSTEM.INI to
  214.     'shell=desktop.exe'.  DeskTop will also launch the applications
  215.     listed on the LOAD and RUN lines of your WIN.INI file.
  216.   Under Windows 2.0:
  217.     Type WIN :DESKTOP to use DeskTop as the shell.  The MS-DOS Executive
  218.     will not be loaded.   DeskTop will also launch the applications
  219.     listed on the LOAD and RUN lines of your WIN.INI file.
  220. * Some performance improvements have been made and minor bugs have
  221.   been fixed.

  223.                         Version 3.13
  224. * The Select Directory dialog box for menu modifications did not list
  225.   all of the drives on it's pulldown menu.  This has been fixed.
  226. * The File Manager had a very infrequent update problem occuring when
  227.   selecting between source directories with a small number of files.
  228.   Sometimes the file list would reflect some of the files previously
  229.   displayed.  This has been fixed.

  232. * DeskTop now abbreviates it's title bar while iconic.  This should
  233.   improve the icon appearance under Windows 3.0.

  238. * Some users with memory boards/drivers (usually in 286 machines)
  239.   were experiencing an application error under protect mode.  This
  240.   is caused by the free memory display, which can be disabled by
  241.   deselecting the 'Display free memory' configuration in real mode.
  242.   Corrections have been made to eliminate this problem.
  243. * The drive status free memory display should now be accurate and
  244.   match that displayed by Windows 3.0.

  247. * This version is compatible with Windows 2.x and 3.0.
  248. * The option to print the METZ Software order form has been added to
  249.   the About dialog.

  265.        Rename:       Allows you to individually rename the selected files.
  266.        Print:        Prints the selected files.
  267.        Select all:   Selects (highlights) all files in the listbox.
  268.      Source:         Drive selection for source directory listing.
  269.      Destination:    Drive selection for destination directory listing.
  270.      Attributes:     Select the file attributes you are interested in.
  271.                      (default is all file attributes)

  273.      You can now copy/move files to multiple floppy disks.  Desktop
  274.   will ask for the next disk when there is insufficient space on the
  275.   current destination floppy drive.
  276.      File copy/move - because attributes were being set and reset, a write
  277.   protected disk caused a 'Write Protected' error message to be displayed.
  278.   Desktop now will only display a 'Write Protected' error when you try
  279.   to Move files from a write protected disk.  Files cannot be deleted
  280.   on a write protected disk.
  281. * The File manager now has a Print option.  All selected files will
  282.   be sent to the printer regardless of their type or size.  Normally,
  283.   you will only want to print ascii text files with this function.
  284.   Lines will be wrapped if they are wider than the printer page.
  285.   A cancel dialog does appear while Desktop is printing each file so
  286.   that you can interrupt the process.
  287. * There is a Configuration-Print option so that you can configure how
  288.   the file manager prints files.  Select 'Line Wrap' when you want lines
  289.   which are longer than the paper width, to be wrapped to the next line
  290.   (this is the default).
  291.   Set the 'Tabstops' value to indicate what the tabstop interval is.
  292.   (A value of 0 will remove tabs from the output.)
  293. * The Utilities menu now has a System Status option.  System Status
  294.   displays memory and disk information.

  297. * The current directory display had a cosmetic bug where it would
  298.   overlay the old directory text instead of clearing it.

  303. * The DESKTOP.MAN file has been included to provide more documentation

  305. * The multiple selection listbox has been patched to prevent the

  307.   <  Microsoft has a bug within multiple selection style listboxes.
  308.   The File Manager Files listbox is a multiple selection listbox.
  309.   If you have any empty area at the bottom of the listbox, the last
  310.   entry gets internally corrupted when you click on the empty area
  311.   with a mouse. >
  312.   The patch now allows you to click in the empty area.
  313. * Lock System has been added to the Utilities menu.  With Lock System
  314.   you can lock your terminal and prevent unauthorized use.  The password
  315.   is case sensitive (upper and lower case characters must match).
  316.   'Unlock attempt failed...' is displayed if an invalid password is
  317.   entered.
  318.   This feature will not prevent someone from rebooting or powering off
  319.   your machine.
  320. * When you copy or move files with the File Manager, it will now ask
  321.   if you want to automatically replace existing files.
  322. * Files listed by the file manager incorrectly displayed the file date of
  323.   1/01/00 as 1/01/100.  This has been fixed.

  325.                          Version 2.9
  326. * The File manager now displays files with their size, date, time, and
  327.   attributes.  Attribute flags are:
  328.   R - read only, A - archived, S - system, H - hidden.
  329. * Files can now be moved, copied, and deleted regardless of their
  330.   attributes.  Desktop automatically manipulates the attributes during
  331.   the process.  The file date, time, and attributes are duplicated on
  332.   the destination file(s).
  333. * Desktop no longer defaults to the root directory when you change drives.
  334.   The default directory of the drive is now pre-selected.
  335. * If the Control key is pressed when an application is run, the
  336.   application will be maximized (zoomed).  Some applications are
  337.   not designed to be zoomed, but still work.  The decision
  338.   whether to zoom, or not to zoom, is up to you.
  339.  
  340.                          Version 2.8
  341. * The menu entries now have room for a Working Directory entry.  A
  342.   Working Directory is the directory you wish to move to before
  343.   loading an application and/or file.  The entry should be a valid
  344.   drive and/or directory, or blank.  If Desktop is unable to move
  345.   to the Working Directory, you will be asked if it is ok to continue
  346.   anyway.  When the Working Directory is blank, Desktop will default
  347.   to the directory you were in when the menu was loaded.
  348. * If a menu entry contains a Working Directory but not an application,
  349.   Desktop will move to that directory.  (This can be used as a quick
  350.   way to switch directories.)
  351. * The Auto Menu Generator will automatically choose the working
  352.   directory for the menu entries generated.
  353. * The file format has been changed so that menu entries are stored
  354.   in a more efficient manner.  Desktop will automatically convert your
  355.   old file to this new format.  (When you save the file it will
  356.   assume the new format.)
  357. * Running DOS applications is now very reliable and will correctly pass
  358.   application parameters.  Many DOS applications do require a .PIF file
  359.   in order to run correctly under Windows.  You can specify a .PIF
  360.   file as the application for Desktop to run.  Chapter 9 of the Microsoft
  361.   Windows User's Guide explains how to run non-Windows applications.
  362.   Use the same guidelines for running DOS applications from Desktop.
  363.   To run COMMAND.COM with parameters, specify COMMAND.COM as the application
  364.   and precede the parameters with a /c as in '/c dir'.  Other DOS
  365.   applications may have their own command line syntax as well.
  366. * The DOS/Non-Windows checkbox has been removed since it is no longer
  367.   required.
  368. * If the Shift key is pressed when an application is run, the
  369.   application will be iconized.
  370. * The Run command will append '.EXE' to the application name if there is
  371.   no period in the application name.
  372. * The directory tree is now preloaded by Desktop.  Change Directory
  373.   and File Manager menu items will now load a lot faster.  Some menu
  374.   items are briefly disabled (grayed) until the tree has been loaded.
  375. * The Auto Menu Generator no longer ignores the drive selection when
  376.   processing only the current directory.
  377. * The Auto Menu Generator did not properly distribute the generated
  378.   menu between the listboxes when processing only the current directory.
  379. * The crosshair cursor displayed when the Edit Mode is other than Run
  380.   no longer has the annoying blink when moved.
  381. * The clipboard can be used to copy/move values between edit fields in
  382.   dialog boxes.  Use Shift Delete to cut, Shift Insert to paste.

  385. * The Change Directory dialog now will change directories and exit
  386.   when you double click on a directory.
  387. * WIN :DESKTOP filename - will now correctly accept parameters.
  388.   (i.e. WIN :DESKTOP DESKTOP.DSK)  This syntax will cause Windows to
  389.   load only Desktop, and result in more available memory.  The MS-DOS
  390.   Executive does load resources that are required by some
  391.   applications.  If your application does not perform correctly, do
  392.   not use this option.

  395. * The performance of the move option of the file manager has been
  396.   improved.

  427. * When Desktop is re-sized, a horizontal scroll bar and only
  428.   one menu will appear if the Desktop window area is small.  Use the
  429.   scrollbar, Tab key, or right/left arrow keys to switch between menus.
  430.   This allows a better view of each menu when Desktop takes up a small
  431.   area of the screen.
  432. * The directory display is now re-positioned when necessary so that it
  433.   will remain visible.
  434. * Change Directory and File Finder allow you to continue using Desktop
  435.   while these dialog boxes are active.
  436. * Dialog box buttons now have accelerator keys associated with them.  Press
  437.   Alt and the underlined character in the button to activate that button.
  438. * With high resolution monitors beyond normal VGA resolution the
  439.   menus displayed more text than the application description.  The menus
  440.   now will display only the descriptions.
  441. * The cursor is now hidden when the Screen Saver appears.

  443.                 Version 2.41 - released 6/9/89
  444. * If you are using a 386 system with virtual memory drivers, we do not
  445.   suggest typing Desktop at the DOS prompt, instead, use WIN Desktop.
  446.   Some 386 systems with virtual memory drivers will hang when Windows
  447.   is exited.  We will have this problem fixed in a later release.
  448. * The time, free memory, and directory displays were not device
  449.   independent which could cause poor appearance.  (Slightly noticeable
  450.   with a VGA monitor.)  They also did not use the user defined windows
  451.   configuration colors.
  452. * The change directory dialog box has a better interface now.
  453.   Double clicking with the mouse or pressing enter will select the
  454.   directory to go to.  When a drive is selected, the tree will be displayed
  455.   for that drive when you press enter or double click with the mouse.
  456. * The Run option now erases the parameters edit the first time you change
  457.   the application edit contents.  This prevents passing an invalid file
  458.   to the application to be run.
  459. * A Cascade option has been added to the Windows menu.  Active windows
  460.   are arranged from the top left to the bottom right of the screen.
  461.   Each window's caption bar is visible.  Remaining windows are iconed.
  462. * A file manager utility has been added.  Using a point and shoot
  463.   style interface you can copy or move files between directories, or
  464.   you can delete selected files.
  465. * A Menu Generator has been added.  The menu generator lets you specify
  466.   a drive, the types of files to be included, and three different sort
  467.   methods.  Your entire drive is then searched and a complete menu is
  468.   built.  No more switching directories!
  469. * A file finder is now included.  Searches an entire drive for specified
  470.   filename.  Wildcards are allowed.
  471. * An order form is now included to make registration easy!
  472. * Documentation will be sent to all registered users.
